Falsely accused of using AI? Here is what actually works.

First, breathe. AI detectors are wrong constantly. A Stanford-affiliated study in Patterns (2023) tested seven detectors and found they wrongly flagged 61% of TOEFL essays written by non-native English speakers, and dozens of universities have since switched detection off because of false positives. Being flagged does not mean anyone has proof. It means a statistical guess landed on you.
If you are accused right now
- Do not confess to something you did not do to make it go away. A quick apology becomes a record.
- Gather what already exists. Google Docs and Word keep version history: File, Version history, See version history in Docs. Screenshots of drafts, notes, outlines, browser history from the writing sessions, texts to friends about the essay. All of it shows work happening over time.
- Ask one precise question: "What is the false positive rate of the detector you used, and was my work reviewed by a person?" Vanderbilt disabled Turnitin's detector in 2023, noting that even a 1% false-positive rate across its roughly 75,000 annual papers would wrongly implicate around 750 papers a year. Your teacher may not know this.
- Show process, not protest. The strongest defence is evidence of how the essay came to exist, not how upset you are. Bring drafts and history to the meeting and walk through how you wrote it.
- Loop in a parent or advisor early if the school starts a formal process. You are allowed support.
